Porsche 944 LS Swap: Custom Radiator Upgrade – Part 1

The original radiator in a Porsche 944 is a paltry 24″ x 14″ which is just enough to keep the little N/A four-cylinder engine cool. However, since we have a modified high-performance LS V8 in our Rally car, the OEM radiator isn’t going to cut it. In fact, our original upgraded radiator, a 24″ x 16″ couldn’t even handle Rally racing. So, with advice from a fellow 944 LS Swap racer, we purchased a 24″x19″ dual-pass racing radiator. This video series will show you how we are going to cut and modify the vehicle and radiator to fit properly, and get enough airflow to keep our LS racing engine cool.

Huge thank you and shout-out to:

The Porsche 944 is a sports car manufactured by German automobile manufacturer Porsche from 1982 to 1991. A front-engine, rear-wheel drive mid-level model based on the 924 platform, the 944 was available in coupé or cabriolet body styles, with either naturally aspirated or turbocharged engines.

The LS based small-block engine is the primary V-8 used in General Motors’ line of rear-wheel-drive cars and trucks. Introduced in January 1995, it is a “clean sheet” design with only rod bearings, lifters, and bore spacing in common with the longstanding Chevrolet small block V8 that preceded it as the basis for GM small-block V8s. The basic LS variations use cast iron blocks, while performance editions are all aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners. The LS small-block has been manufactured in three Generations – III, IV, and V – with preceding Generations I and II of modular GM small-block engines having been based on the Chevrolet small-block V8 originally designed in 1955. GM recycled the “LT” designation beginning with the LS Generation V “LT1” in 2014.

Porsche 944 Rally: How To Install Race Louvers – Part 2

Race Louvers was founded based on the need for hood extractors that have actually been developed, tested and documented with real data. The results were a serious extractor with the ability to double the cooling airflow thru the radiator and provide four times the front downforce when compared to the competition. We then shop tested our extractors on several other types of cars all yielding similar results and a new feature we call zero speed cooling were the natural cooling rate once parked was cut in half compared to the competition. The end result was a hood extractor capable of providing over 40lbs of front downforce at 100mph while still providing sufficient cooling.

Porsche 944 Rally V8: We Now Own A Subaru!

A quick status update of our Porsche 944 LS Swap Rally V8 project car build. After spending some time recuperating our losses, we have dis-assembled the engine, and found not one, but three shattered pistons. LOL, and here I told myself I wasn’t going to own any more Subaru engines.

The second generation CR-V was a full redesign, based on the seventh generation Civic, and powered by the K24A1 engine. North American versions of the new engine produced 160 hp (119 kW) and 162 lbf⋅ft (219 N⋅m) of torque. The new CR-V retained the fuel economy of the previous model because of the i-VTEC system. The new chassis had increased torsional and bending rigidity, the suspension included front toe control link MacPherson struts and a rear reactive-link double wishbone; the compact rear suspension increased cargo space to 72 cu ft. The second generation CR-V was Car and Driver magazine’s Best Small SUV for 2002 and 2003.
