Porsche 944 LS Swap: Custom Radiator Upgrade – Part 2
Follow along as we attempt to 3D scan our new Spal fans, oil cooler and radiator. Spoiler alert, it does not go well. In order to design and fabricate the fan shroud, which will hold these components in place, we need the dimensions of the fans, oil cooler and radiator, so we can construct a strong shroud with minimal airflow restriction. In the end, the 3D scanner really hates dark colored parts, so we will have to measure everything by hand and design it all from scratch in 3D CAD.

The Porsche 944 is a sports car manufactured by German automobile manufacturer Porsche from 1982 to 1991. A front-engine, rear-wheel drive mid-level model based on the 924 platform, the 944 was available in coupé or cabriolet body styles, with either naturally aspirated or turbocharged engines.

The LS based small-block engine is the primary V-8 used in General Motors’ line of rear-wheel-drive cars and trucks. Introduced in January 1995, it is a “clean sheet” design with only rod bearings, lifters, and bore spacing in common with the longstanding Chevrolet small block V8 that preceded it as the basis for GM small-block V8s. The basic LS variations use cast iron blocks, while performance editions are all aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners. The LS small-block has been manufactured in three Generations – III, IV, and V – with preceding Generations I and II of modular GM small-block engines having been based on the Chevrolet small-block V8 originally designed in 1955. GM recycled the “LT” designation beginning with the LS Generation V “LT1” in 2014.
