How To Install A Turbocharger – Part 10 of 20

Part 10 of 20. This video series will cover the installation of the Speed By Design (stage 2) turbocharger kit onto a 2013 Scion FR-S. This series will also apply to the Subaru BRZ, and the GReddy turbo kits. The video is unedited, and shows the entire process, start to finish; including all the cussing, headaches, broken parts, yelling, wrenching, ratcheting and victory screeches!

In This Video:

– Question 1: The kit only provided one silicone hose coupling that fits the 3″ pipe!
– Answer 1: Try using soapy water to squeeze it in there.
– Answer From SBD: There should be two. Looking into it.

– Question 2: Blow-off valve has been relocated to passenger side. There are no instructions on how to connect it. There is not enough hose to connect it to anything. Where does it go?
– Answer 2: You have to do it yourself. It needs to T-junction into the brake booster.
– Answer From SBD: Get 5ft of 1/4″ vacuum hose, and use a 3/8″ to 3/8″ to 1/4″ T junction. Connect it to the brake booster if your car is a manual transmission.

– Question 3: The output air pipe from the compressor is way out of alignment. What do I do?
– Answer 3: You might have to “re-clock” the turbo.
– Answer From SBD: Send pictures and we will look into it.

– Question 4: I am unable to fully tighten one of the four studs holding the turbo to the header. What type of tool do I need to get to that nut?
– Answer 4: Try using a stubby wrench, or a crowfoot, or a wobble extension.

– Question 5: I am missing the hardware that mounts the air intake coupling to the compressor!
– Answer 5: No answer. Had to use leftover hardware.
– Answer From SBD: Looking into it.

– Question 6: I have a “loose” oil fitting, that was tight the day before. I used thread sealant for oil fittings, as instructed. What do I do? Do i need to take it all apart and re-do it?
– Answer 6: The engine block is very soft metal, try to see if it works first, and if not, then re-do it.
– Answer From SBD: Use silicone or teflon tape on all of the fittings.

– Question 7: Where does the PCV valve go (Google was not helpful at all), and should I use hose clamps on the PCV line(s)?
– Answer 7: You absolutely must use hose clamps on the PCV lines. PCV valve is where you thought it was.
– Answer From SBD: Check Shiv’s website for instructions.

– Question 8: How do I install the turbo blanket? There is no room. The wastegate actuator & mounting brackets are in the way!
– Answer 8: No answer. Had to squeeze it in there and hope it works.
– Answer From SBD: It fits, but it is tight. It might of been easier if you had installed it before mounting the turbo.
